Ten Federal Engineers Recognized for High-Caliber Achievements

Engineers in the federal government are continually on the cutting edge of their profession. They employ energy savings and solar power to government buildings; coordinate and oversee high-altitude collection of intelligence data by U-2 aircraft; provide environmental restoration oversight following a coal ash spill; manage water resources or Special Forces construction projects in Afghanistan; and work to improve safety and operations at worldwide nuclear facilities.

Commitment to Nuclear Power Safety and Disaster Response Garners 2012 Federal Engineer of the Year Award

Steven Arndt, Ph.D., P.E., a senior technical advisor with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, has been named the National Society of Professional Engineers' 2012 Federal Engineer of the Year. Arndt received the honor during the 33rd Annual FEYA Banquet at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on February 23, 2012.

Capt. Richard Gelting, Ph.D., P.E., a team leader and senior environmental engineer with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, has been named the National Society of Professional Engineers' 2013 Federal Engineer of the Year. Gelting received the honor during the 34th Annual FEYA Banquet at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on February 21, 2013.

Sequestration and the Public Health, Safety, and Welfare

The National Society of Professional Engineers has written to national leaders about perhaps an overlooked, but potentially grave, result of the current budget impasse and sequestration: the severely diminished ability of professional engineers in the public and private sectors to fulfill their ethical obligation to protect the public health and safety. In short, the continuing failure to reach agreement on federal budget matters has the very real potential to place U.S. citizens at risk.
