PE REPORT
Graduate Enrollment in Engineering
Overall enrollment in science and engineering graduate programs in the US remained stagnant for 2012. Yet, enrollment in engineering graduate student enrollment increased by 1.3%, from 146,501 students in 2011 to 148,385 in 2012, according to the National Science Foundation.
The increase is linked to growing numbers in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and metallurgical or materials engineering. There has also been a rise in enrollment by foreign graduate students in US science and engineering programs. More than 176,000 foreign graduate students on temporary visas enrolled in 2012—a 4.3% increase over 2011 enrollment. The number of students who are US citizens and permanent residents dropped by 1.7% from 2011 to 385,343.
