Major General, PE Killed in Afghanistan

Maj. Gen. Harold Greene, P.E.Maj. Gen. Harold Greene, P.E., deputy commander of the Combined Security Transition Command in Kabul, Afghanistan, became the highest-ranking American service member to be killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He was shot and killed on August 5 when an individual wearing a uniform of the Afghan National Security Forces fired into a group of coalition and Afghan service members on a routine visit to the Marshal Fahim National Defense University. He was the highest ranking officer killed in combat since 1970.

A professional engineer licensed in Virginia, Greene held a bachelor’s degree in materials engineering and a master’s degree in management engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He received his commission as an engineer, and he also earned a PhD in materials science and a master’s in mechanical engineering from the University of Southern California.
