Annual Meeting in Review

F

rom July 1–6 in Washington, DC, NSPE members from around the country enjoyed in-depth education sessions, valuable networking opportunities, and informal discussions about the profession’s future at the Society’s 2014 Annual Meeting.

Sessions for NSPE leaders focused on coordinating advocacy campaigns, key legislative and regulatory issues, social media, and the latest tool in NSPE’s advocacy arsenal: the revamped online Legislative Action Center designed by VoterVoice. Education sessions covered topics such as hydraulic fracturing, professional development, and the Washington subway extension project. Keynote speeches were delivered by Victor Mendez, acting deputy secretary of the Department of Transportation, and Barbara Sisson, assistant chief of the Army Reserve.

Seven members confirmed their dedication to the standards and dignity of the engineering profession by taking part in the Order of the Engineer ceremony. By reciting the Obligation of the Engineer and placing the traditional stainless steel rings on their pinky fingers, they pledged to give their utmost to the profession.

During the meeting, which marked the Society’s 80th anniversary, many individual awards were presented to accomplished members (see PEGASUS Winner Continues Engineering Legacy, PEHE Award Honors Founder of Construction Engineering Program, and Honorees Awarded for Dedication to Profession, NSPE) and new officers were installed for 2014–15, including NSPE President Harve Hnatiuk, P.E., F.NSPE, the Board of Directors, and the House of Delegates. Kodi Jean Church, P.E., Esq., F.NSPE, of Minnesota, was elected vice president and will serve as president in 2016–17.

NSPE officers will be guided by a new strategic plan, which was approved by the House of Delegates on July 5. The new plan refocuses NSPE on those areas where it can best serve members while staying true to founder David Steinman’s values. (See p. 32.)

Looking ahead, the 2015 Annual Meeting will be held in Seattle from July 14–19. Mark your calendars today!

Check out our 2014 Annual Meeting wrap-up online at www.nspe.org/annualmeeting. You can find PDFs of presentations, a photo collection, and the strategic plan approved by the House of Delegates. Annual meeting participants also took to Twitter to share their experiences, which you’ll find at #NSPE14.
