Award Winner Fuses Medicine, Engineering

Stanford University’s Paul Yock, who developed a biomedical technology program that expands the role of engineering in medicine, has been named the winner of the National Academy of Engineering’s top education award.

Yock is the founder of the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign, which trains multidisciplinary leaders who will create innovations in health technology. The center is among the first academic training programs to establish a formal process for bringing together engineers and physicians to collaborate on project-based learning experiences.

He began his career as an interventional cardiologist and later was the founding cochair of Stanford’s department of bioengineering.

NAE’s Bernard M. Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education recognizes new methods and concepts in higher education aimed at developing engineering leaders. The winner receives $500,000.
