NSPE Installs Missouri PE as President
CREDIT: JORGE DE CASANOVA,CORPORA STUDIOSBritt E. Smith, P.E., F.NSPE, was officially welcomed as NSPE’s 2022–2023 president during NSPECon22 in Philadelphia on August 2. He takes over the helm from NSPE President 2021–2022 Rick Guerra, P.E., F. NSPE.
“I can say honestly that I could not be more humbled to be the next president of NSPE,” said Smith. “I never dreamed that I would be in this position but knew that I wanted to give back to the profession that has provided so much for me and my family.”
Smith is dedicated to the betterment of the profession and NSPE, including carrying out the Society’s commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion. He is enthusiastic about promoting the ethical and competent practice of engineering. Additionally, he has provided valuable Force, and as Missouri’s representative to the NSPE House of Delegates. Smith was named an NSPE Fellow in 2016.
“His passion for the professional engineer and the engineering profession is self-evident,” said NSPE Past President Tim Austin, P.E., F.NSPE. “The organization has and will continue to benefit from his track record, experience, and involvement at all levels of the organization.
A member of NSPE and the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers since 1997, Smith has held many volunteer leadership positions at all levels of NSPE, including serving on the Committee on Policy and Advocacy, the Honors and Awards Committee, the Delivery System, Communication, and Technology Task Force, and as Missouri’s representative to the NSPE House of Delegates. Smith was named an NSPE Fellow in 2016.
Members of the Missouri Society have lauded his leadership and contributions. He served in a variety of chapter and state-level leadership positions, including as the 2011–2012 state president and the Jefferson City Chapter president in 2001.
Smith is currently the operations division director for the City of Jefferson, where he manages all aspects of operations related to streets, parking, central maintenance, city facilities, and airport, and leverages all available resources to accomplish the varying missions of each division. He has worked for the city since 1995 and has over 20 years of experience working as a civil engineer. Smith has also held positions with the MECO Engineering Co. and with the Missouri Department of Conservation.
Getting to Know Britt Smith
Family Life: Britt Smith and his wife, Candy, have three adult children—Glenn, Hannah, and Grace. In addition to their joint volunteer activities, the couple enjoys hiking, travel, and scuba diving. His family has also hosted French and Japanese exchange students.
Education: Smith has a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly the University of Missouri – Rolla). He is an honor graduate of the US Military Flight School.
Career: Smith has government and civil engineering experience, consulting knowledge, and a background in aerospace engineering. He served in the US Army.
Volunteering: Smith has served as a MATHCOUNTS volunteer since 1998. He is involved with the United Way of Central Missouri (as fund allocation chair) and serves as a counselor for the Jefferson City Marriage Encounter. For many years, he volunteered with a local Boy Scouts troop and as a baseball and softball coach.
