LUKE ROBITAILLE OF EULESS, TEXAS, REACTS TO HIS MATHCOUNTS VICTORIES IN 2017 AND 2018.

Luke needed just 14.55 seconds to answer the winning question:
The first three terms of an infinite arithmetic sequence are 3.46, 2.47 and 1.48, in that order. What is the first integer term in this sequence?

Mathlete Luke Robitaille of Euless, Texas, became the first repeat national champion of MATHCOUNTS, after his first-place finish on May 14. The victory followed his first-place finish in 2017 as a seventh-grader as well as a second-place finish in 2016 as a sixth-grader.

So, in the spirit of the Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition, consider the following word problem: If Luke wins the $20,000 Donald G. Weinert College Scholarship as national champion twice; the $2,500 award for winning the written competition twice; $2,500 three times for being on the first-place team, and $7,500 for countdown runner-up, what is the total dollar amount of his MATHCOUNTS college scholarships?

Answer: $58,500.

Not a bad start on college savings.

After his second win, Luke also appeared on Live! With Kelly and Ryan, where he competed against hosts Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest in a math competition. (Watch it here).

Robitaille was among 224 competitors from all 50 states, plus US territories and schools that serve the US State and Defense departments, who traveled to the nation’s capital after earning a spot in the national competition. More than 100,000 students participated in the local and state competitions this year.

MATHCOUNTS was founded by NSPE, CNA, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and hundreds of NSPE members volunteer their time to coaching and competitions around the country.
