A Week of Discovery Aims To Make a Difference
“Let’s Make a Difference.” It’s the simple guiding message not only for Engineers Week 2014, but also the newly unveiled DiscoverE, formerly the National Engineers Week Foundation.
In November, the National Engineers Week Foundation rebranded itself as DiscoverE, but Engineers Week is still the cornerstone of its efforts. To symbolize this, EWeek has adopted DiscoverE’s “Let’s Make a Difference” tagline as its annual theme.
Engineers Week will be held February 16–22, and its new Web site comes with inspiring videos, educational activities, volunteer training, and downloadable materials. With resources geared toward educators, students, volunteers, and parents, everyone can help spread the word about engineering.
All of EWeek’s familiar programs return this year, including Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (February 20), the Future City finals (February 16–18), DiscoverE Family Day (February 22), and the Global Marathon For, By, and About Women in Engineering and Technology (March 5–7).
Founded by NSPE in 1951, EWeek has become a nationwide phenomenon celebrating engineers, increasing public dialogue about the need for engineers, and bringing the profession into the lives of many.
A live kickoff event was scheduled to announce Engineers Week 2014 at the University of Delaware on November 15, streamed online from the new Web site. Speakers were to include Patrick Harker, president of the university; Karen Fletcher, chief engineer for DuPont; and Gary Blank, 2014 president of IEEE-USA. Both DuPont and IEEE-USA are cochair organizations for EWeek next year.
