NSPE’s Stance on Industrial Exemptions
NSPE policy states that all engineers who are in responsible charge of the practice of engineering as defined in the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying’s Model Law and Rules in a manner that potentially impacts the public health, safety, and welfare should be required by all state statutes to be licensed professional engineers. NSPE recommends the phasing out of existing industrial exemptions in state licensing laws.
In 2013, NCEES’s Industrial Exemption Task Force released a table to provide information on the status of exemptions from engineering licensure laws and regulations in each licensing jurisdiction. The development of the table was based on a review of the statute and rules in each state addition to input from state licensing boards.
