In response to a National Institute of Standards and Technology request for comments on the development of technical standards for artificial intelligence, NSPE has encouraged policymakers to protect the public health, safety, and welfare when developing artificial intelligence technical standards and considering complex AI issues.
In its May 31, 2019 statement, NSPE advocated for the involvement of professional engineers in the creation of the AI technical standards, in addition to urging NIST to prioritize the public’s health, safety, and welfare throughout the process. NSPE also advised NIST to include an ethical framework in their standards when it comes to the development of AI decision-making.
