New Site Will Promote Engineering Activities Nationwide

EWeek Web siteThe National Engineers Week Foundation has launched a new Web site called My Discover-E, which is the first public portal to aggregate and promote engineering events across the U.S.

The site (www.mydiscover-e.org) targets parents, educators, and club leaders, and launched in conjunction with the USA Science and Engineering Festival, October 23?24 in Washington, D.C. My Discover-E connects users to resources such as event calendars and searches, maps, and an engineer network. Site features include:

  • Locate an Engineering Event: Enables users to search on location, engineering discipline, age group, and time of year. Events will include engineering clubs, camps, competitions, and field trips.
  • Find an Engineer: Allows parents and other adults to request an engineer to work with kids or events. Engineer mentors will be able to register on the site to participate in outreach and access training and program resources.
  • Direct Engagement: Visitors will be able to rate and comment on programs. Families across the country will be able to participate in a community forum.

The S. D. Bechtel Jr. Foundation provided a grant for My Discover-E. Stephen Bechtel Jr., P.E., former chairman of the board of the Bechtel Group Inc., is an NSPE member.

The site launch coincided with the 20th anniversary celebration of its parent program, Discover "E." The program was the first national outreach effort for volunteers to share the excitement of engineering with K?12 students. Its mission is to link young people and their families to engineers, events, and activities nationwide.

Discover "E" is an initiative from the National Engineers Week Foundation, a coalition of more than 100 professional societies, corporations, and government agencies dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce.
