How do students and practicing engineers view their chosen field? A recent survey of 1,083 students and 2,278 engineers, in five regions (the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Taiwan and Israel), revealed their inspirations, motivations, and challenges.

83% of engineers say they would recommend becoming an engineer to someone they know
 
66% of engineers say engineering as a career is better than they thought it would be before starting their first engineering job

Engineers and students were highly motivated by:

On the route to the PE license, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam is an early requirement. Few engineering students, however, take the exam, which is offered in seven disciplines: chemical, civil, electrical and computer, environmental, industrial and systems, mechanical, and other disciplines.
