When Can I Take the PE Exam?

When Can I Take the PE Exam? When can I take the PE exam? is one of the most common questions from PE license candidates. The answer varies by state, and now NSPE members have free access to all the answers in one comprehensive resource.

The new report When Can I Take the PE Exam? States Allowing Examination Before Experience provides the state-by-state details. Traditionally, licensure candidates have been permitted to take the PE exam after passing the FE exam and gaining four years of approved experience. Beginning in 2005, however, states began to consider allowing candidates to take the PE exam before gaining four years of experience. The four years of experience would still be required, but they would not be a prerequisite for taking the PE exam.

As of November 2017, there were 14 states that allowed the early taking of the PE exam.
