A Day to Celebrate

PE Day PhotoHundreds of PEs, students, and organizations celebrated the second annual Licensed Professional Engineers Day on August 2, celebrating the daily work and achievements of professionals whose work often goes unnoticed.

Participants used social media to join in on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram, using the hashtag #LicensedPEDay. Engineers from around the world shared why they became PEs, students cited why they were striving to get licensed, companies praised the PEs working for their organizations, and many highlighted the ways they were celebrating. Some companies provided sweet treats like cake or cookies and shared images on social media of employees declaring why they became PEs.

PE Day PhotoIn addition, 16 state and local governments issued official proclamations in recognition of PE Day, including Texas, Wyoming, Louisiana, and Missouri. In total, eight states, six cities, and two counties issued proclamations.

PE Day first launched in 2016. Tim Austin, P.E., F.NSPE, 2015–2016 NSPE president, developed the concept. He wanted a day separate from Engineers Week and the US Science and Engineering Festival to celebrate and give recognition to licensed PEs. The first Wednesday of August was chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the first professional engineering license being issued to Charles Bellamy in Wyoming in August 1907.

Next year’s Licensed PE Day will take place on August 1.
