The National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) has welcomed seven (7) professional engineers to its 2025 class of Fellow members. The Fellow designation honors active NSPE members who have demonstrated exemplary and devoted service to their profession, the Society, and their community. Requirements for the title include holding at least one elected office at any level and active involvement at the national level.

Among this year’s distinguished honorees is Colin Hewett, P.E., from Maine. Hewett has been a dedicated member of NSPE and the Maine Society of Professional Engineers (MeSPE) for many years.  For more than 30 years, Colin Hewett has served as a principal and consulting electrical engineer with Hewett & Whitney in Winthrop, Maine. He has been involved in all phases of electrical engineering for various new construction, renovation, and design projects, including home care facilities, fire stations, clinics, art and technology centers, and schools. Hewett is a LEED certified professional and has been a member of the US Green Building Council. He received the Maine Preservation Honor Award, which celebrates excellence in historic preservation, in 2015 and 2023.

Prior to cofounding the firm, Colin served in the U.S. Air Force, where took on the role of Officer in Charge (OIC) of Environmental and Contract Planning, OIC of Resource Management, and OIC of Readiness Management. His duties included electrical engineering design, project electrical inspections and contract management, and serving as a missile systems analyst technician.

Since becoming a member of NSPE in 1996, Hewett has made significant contributions to the engineering profession and taken on various leadership roles throughout his membership. From 2012 to 2017, he served as president of MeSPE. In 2018, he became the NSPE House of Delegates representative for Maine and served two consecutive terms. His experiences in this role provided valuable knowledge and perspectives that improved MeSPE’s services to members. He currently serves as a member of the MeSPE Board of Directors. He has also served as the MeSPE representative in the Maine QBS Council from 2008 to 2015 (QBS involves the procurement of engineering services using a qualifications-based selection process).

Hewett is also dedicated to fostering the next generation of engineers and supporting professional development programs. He is an active participant in the MATHCOUNTS program for both the chapter and state competitions and has provided support for the MeSPE Scholarship Program for many years. For two decades, MeSPE and the University of Maine have hosted an annual educational symposium where PEs can acquire credits toward license renewal requirements and where unlicensed engineers can gain exposure to NSPE. Since its inception, Hewett has helped organize speakers and shared master of ceremonies duties for this event. He has also introduced engineering students and unlicensed engineers to the benefits of joining MeSPE and NSPE by leading numerous tours of construction projects, NSPE state and territorial societies can nominate one person for each 500 voting members on their rolls per year. Nominations are also open to NSPE interest groups, chartered affinity groups, and the Board of Directors. Since its establishment in 2000, around one percent of all NSPE members have advanced to this highest rank in volunteer membership.

“It is with great enthusiasm that we recognize this year’s class of Fellows, who have been selected by their peers for exceptional and dedicated service at the chapter, state, and national levels of NSPE,” says NSPE President Brian Malm, P.E., F.NSPE. “NSPE is proud of their accomplishments and indelible mark on the engineering profession, the Society, and their communities. We look forward to their continued leadership and contributions.”
