For years, the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, founded by NSPE member and former Bechtel Corp. Chairman Stephen Bechtel Jr., P.E., has financially supported the work of the National Engineers Week Foundation. In 1990, the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation donated  the seed money to start the DiscoverE program, the first formal national outreach call for and engagement by engineer volunteers in K?12 education. Most recently, the foundation has provided the EWeek foundation with a $250,000 grant.

The money will go toward strengthening the Future City competition, sustaining the Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day program, and building capacity within the National Engineers Week Foundation. For example, funds will enable the foundation to purchase a competition management system for the Future City program that will allow online submissions, create and distribute a new volunteer kit for Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, and expand the social media presence for foundation programs.

The S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation is a member of the National Engineers Week Foundation Leadership Council. Watch a video of Stephen Bechtel Jr. and his son Riley, current Bechtel Group chairman and CEO, discussing the DiscoverE program and its history at
