The NSPE Legislative and Governmental Affairs Committee met at the Annual Meeting in San Diego to discuss the committee's goals for the coming year and determine NSPE's primary public policy agenda for 2012–13. Based on committee discussions, NSPE will focus on the following federal issues:
- Protecting and promoting qualifications-based selection
- Enhancing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education
- Ensuring Good Samaritan protection for professional engineers volunteering in an emergency
- Enacting comprehensive energy policy
- Improving our nation's infrastructure
- Encouraging licensure of federally employed engineers
