The National Institute of Standards and Technology named Steven L. McCabe, P.E., Deputy Director of the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program. McCabe holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an M.S. in mechanical engineering and engineering mechanics from Colorado State University and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. Prior to joining NIST, McCabe served as Chief Executive Officer of NEES Consortium, Inc., where he was responsible for managing and operating the George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation. McCabe also has served as program manager for the Structural Systems and Hazard Mitigation of Structures program at the National Science Foundation's Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation division. He was a professor of structural engineering at the University of Kansas from 1985–2007. McCabe also has worked as a design and resident engineer, primarily in the nuclear- and fossil-power industries.
