Why did you choose engineering as a career?
My high school math teacher once told me he thought I’d make a good engineer. That simple comment stuck and it shaped my career. It’s a reminder that we often underestimate the impact we can have on someone’s future.
What’s the most fulfilling part of your career?
I have found my niche by combining technical knowledge with communication and creativity. Helping communities move projects from “needed” to “funded” is incredibly rewarding.
What advice would you give to anyone considering becoming a PE?
I’ve never met anyone who regretted earning their PE. It strengthens your credibility, expands your opportunities, and is absolutely worth the effort.
What career or leadership advice would you give to a recent engineering graduate? And to younger PEs?
Get involved in a professional society early. It’s one of the best places to grow your leadership skills in an environment that isn’t tied to your paycheck. Attend meetings, volunteer, serve on a board surround yourself with people who challenge you to grow.
What example can you share of how ethics factors into the work you do?
I help municipalities pursue competitive funding. Even when clients are competing for the same dollars, I am committed to submitting the strongest, most honest application possible for each community I serve.
If you could ask your PE peers to help you with one thing, what would that be?
Let’s be loud and proud about being engineers. Show up authentically. Young people need to see that there isn’t just one “type” of engineer —there’s room for all of us.
Why did you join NSPE?
My first employer strongly supported involvement in the local chapter and encouraged me to participate and I’m grateful they did. (Thank you, Leanne Panduren!) Although I joined for professional development, I have stayed because of the community and impact.
What do you enjoy the most about being an NSPE member?
The ability to make a difference. At the local, state, or national level, you can bring your perspective forward, help shape conversations, and turn ideas into action.
Planning to attend NSPECon26 in New York City, August 5-7, this year?
Yes! This will be my third time attending, and I’m looking forward to reconnecting with friends and meeting new people.
Do you have any hobbies?
I love crocheting and have recently gotten into watercolor. Doing something creative is a big form a self-care for me.
What are some fun facts about you?
I attended a small K-12 school with about 300 students. My high school band performed at Carnegie Hall twice! (I haven’t kept up with the saxophone. These days my only performable talent might be fake sneezing.)
Registration is open for NSPECon26 in New York City, New York!
Volunteering at NSPE is a great opportunity to grow your professional network and connect with other leaders in the field.
Decisions at the ballot box influence policies that support engineering standards and public safety.
