Why did you choose engineering?
When I got to college, I wanted to go into a field that would change the world. I had recently come back from an experience with my family in international development that was focused on agriculture. I was looking at degrees in agriculture and had tested into calculus, and when you put those two together, agricultural engineering is where they intersect. My first statics class was a revelation, and I knew engineering was my field.
What’s the most fulfilling part about your career?
The constant growth and learning and passing that knowledge on to young engineers.
What advice would you give to anyone considering becoming a PE?
Make sure engineering is your passion. Becoming a PE is not just a job, it is a career with a high standard to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public. With that creed, we are among the unsung heroes of society.
Career or leadership advice for new graduates or younger PEs
Becoming a great engineer takes time, so be patient. It takes years of experience and there are no shortcuts.
How do ethics factor into your work?
I work a lot in the public sector, where there are tight budgets with tax dollars at stake. Each project is an exercise in delivering the best product (pump station, park, etc.) that will serve the community.
One thing you’d ask of your PE peers
Just keep being the great community you are, supporting one another and sharing knowledge.
Why did you join NSPE?
Originally, to become a part of our engineering community and network.
At this time it is to help bridge the gap between the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers and NSPE.
What do you enjoy the most about being an NSPE member?
The national connections to other PEs.
Hobbies
Running, hiking, reading, caring for our rescue cats and horses.
Registration is open for NSPECon26 in New York City, New York!
Volunteering at NSPE is a great opportunity to grow your professional network and connect with other leaders in the field.
Decisions at the ballot box influence policies that support engineering standards and public safety.
