NSPE’s committees and task forces are engaged in some of the most important work in the Society.
Serving on a committee or task force allows you to collaborate with some of the profession’s outstanding leaders and gives volunteers insight into the Society’s governance.
The annual call for volunteer applications is typically announced in early spring. Members will find many different opportunities to suit a range of interests - Learning, Advocacy, Membership, New Professionals, Technology, Women’s PE Leadership and more.
High Engagement Opportunities
Serving in a high- engagement role involves significant ongoing participation, including in-person meetings and long-term responsibilities. Members typically serve consecutive terms and meet throughout the year to develop resources for the profession. See available opportunities below.
Board of Ethical Review (BER) (3-year term)
Board of Ethical Review (BER) (3-year term)
The Board of Ethical Review (BER) supports and furthers the mission of NSPE as the authoritative expert in the ethical practice in engineering by rendering impartial opinions on questions of ethics; interpreting and suggesting revisions to the NSPE Code of Ethics, developing and publishing materials related to engineering ethics and conducting studies related to engineering ethics. Members are appointed by the NSPE President and include licensed engineer members from each region and one additional member. Qualifications include an interest in and understanding of ethics as it relates to PEs and engineering. Time commitment is approximately 2-4 hours monthly. Candidates for the coming term will fill vacancies for Southwest Region, Central Region and Member-At-Large (any region).
Council of Fellows Executive Committee (COFEC) (3-year term)
Council of Fellows Executive Committee (COFEC) (3-year term)
The NSPE Council of Fellows Executive Committee (COFEC) annually reviews applications for NSPE Fellow-grade membership. The committee consists of a chairperson, board liaison, and six regional members (one member from each NSPE region.) Only members of NSPE who already hold the Fellow membership grade may serve on COFEC. Appointments to the committee are made by the NSPE President. Regional members serve three-year terms which are staggered to provide continuity. For the coming term, NSPE is seeking to fill positions from the Western and Pacific regions. Only applications from this region will be considered for this term.
Education Foundation Board of Trustees (3-year term)
Education Foundation Board of Trustees (3-year term)
The NSPE Education Foundation is a separate, 501(c)(3) corporation operating under its own articles of incorporation, constitution, and bylaws. The Foundation raises money to support educational scholarships and community-related programs and initiatives supporting engineering and the engineering profession. The NSPE Education Foundation Board is empowered to nominate and elect its Board. NSPE's role is advisory only. The Board of Trustees consists of the NSPE Treasurer, 11 At-Large Trustees, a PEHE representative and voting trustees from MATHCOUNTS, EWeek, and NICET (these trustees are not respective NSPE Board members). The President and Vice President serve one-year terms but are eligible for re-election; all Member-At-Large Trustees serve a three-year term. To promote continuity, terms are staggered. Nominations and appointments are made by the NSPE Foundation Nominating Committee in the spring each year. Applicants who submit their names through the Spring 2026 NSPE Call for Volunteers will be shared with the 2027 Foundation Nominating Committee for a three year term starting July 1, 2027.
Engineers Joint Contract Documents Committee (EJCDC)
Engineers Joint Contract Documents Committee (EJCDC)
The Engineers Joint Contract Documents Committee (EJCDC) furthers the mission of NSPE by contributing to the creation, development and enhancement of programs, publications, contract documents, forms, agreements, and relationships in collaboration with the other partners in EJCDC (ACEC and ASCE) to provide authoritative contract documents for professional engineers' use in their professional practice Members are chosen from active EJCDC committee members, observers, and liaisons to fit the needs of specific families of documents (i.e., construction, design-build, P3, engineering). Service may require travel up to three times per year. Delegates receive travel support for transportation to and from meetings but are responsible for their own housing costs. Observers are responsible for all expenses associated with attending EJCDC meetings.
Moderate Engagement Opportunities
Serving in a moderate engagement role involves steady participation including regular virtual meetings throughout the year, often 1-3 hours per month and online collaboration to complete assigned goals. See available opportunities below.
Committee on Policy and Advocacy
Committee on Policy and Advocacy
The Committee on Policy and Advocacy (COPA) advances NSPE's strategic goal of shaping public policy by promoting the value of the professional engineer and advocating for standards and qualifications that support competent and ethical practices across the engineering team. COPA develops and maintains positions on public policy issues that affect public health, safety, and welfare with particular focus on professional practice and engineering licensure. Beyond policy development, COPA provides strategic guidance to inform NSPE’s advocacy priorities on licensure and professional practice. Committee members take an active role in the committee’s work, contributing time and expertise to help ensure NSPE’s policy positions remain current, credible, and effective.

The Emerging Technologies Committee supports and furthers the mission of NSPE by:
- Guiding the engineering profession and the public in understanding the impact of Emerging Technologies and other Engineering areas on Public Health, Safety, and Welfare.
- Monitoring areas of public risk and providing educational, policy, and general guidance to the appropriate NSPE committees and departments for distribution to our members and the public.
- Making recommendations for areas that require minimum standards and/or the use of appropriately Credentialed Professionals to adequately protect the public.

The Engineering Access and Growth Committee supports and advances the mission of NSPE by strengthening the profession through strategies designed to expand access and foster professional growth for tomorrow’s engineers. By advocating for and supporting a professional culture that values accessibility, opportunity, advancement, retention, and meaningful inclusion. Through ongoing and effective collaboration, education. programs, and outreach, the committee actively works to ensure that NSPE’s membership and leadership reflect the full spectrum of talent, experiences, and backgrounds in society.
Honor Awards Committee

The Honor Awards Committee supports and furthers the mission of NSPE by identifying and recognizing outstanding engineers and their contributions to society and NSPE. The Committee annually evaluates and selects recipients for the NSPE Award and the New Professional Engineer of the Year Award. This Committee delivers recommendations on other awards, as required, to honor individuals who have made contributions to the licensed practice of engineering and the engineering profession.

The Membership Committee furthers the mission of NSPE by increasing effectiveness, unity, and inclusiveness of efforts by national and state leaders (volunteer and staff) in achieving the goals of the membership business model: to offer a compelling value proposition for integrated membership, expand membership at all levels and support the revenue needs of national and its State Societies.
New Professionals Committee
New Professionals Committee
The New Professionals Committee steers NSPE efforts to make membership more useful and attractive to PEs under age 35. The committee provides NSPE leadership with guidance on mentoring, leadership training, and education for new professionals. Members of the New Professionals Committee are also tasked with managing the NSPE Emerging Leaders Program (ELP). ELP furthers the mission of NSPE by engaging early career professionals in a leadership development program designed to further their career goals while also connecting them to the NSPE community.

NSPECon Planning Committee
The NSPECon Planning Committee guides the development of NSPE’s annual conference, shaping a high-quality professional development and exhibitor experience for members, prospective members, sponsors, and partners. Working closely with NSPE staff, the committee helps establish the conference theme, review and select educational sessions, plan networking and tour opportunities, and support sponsorship efforts. Active participation in meetings and committee work is essential to delivering a successful conference. All meetings are held virtually via video conference.

The Women's Leadership Program Task Force provides program recommendations, content identification, potential speaker identification, and evaluation for NSPE women’s leadership programs.
Limited Engagement Opportunities
Serving in a limited engagement opportunity involves short-term or task-based volunteering with a minimal time commitment. A sample of limited engagement opportunities are below.
- Authoring content for NSPE publications - Share your expertise and insights on industry trends, professional practice, education, ethics, leadership, licensure, public policy, engineer access and growth, and technology by serving as a guest writer for PE magazine.
- Review annual conference presentation submissions.
- Meet with your elected officials (and their offices) as a constituent and share professional or technical perspectives as a licensed.
- Professional Engineer on issues affecting public health, safety, and welfare.
- Provide subject matter expertise on engineering related policy issues as opportunities arise.
- Serve as a mentor for the Emerging Leaders Program.
- Serve as a mentor for a new professional.
- Serve as a mentor for an engineering student.
- Be an NSPE online community champion – this is a virtual opportunity to promote community and sharing of ideas through NSPE's online channels
