About the AMA

What is the purpose of the Ask Me Anything (AMA) Initiative?

The AMA is an online, anonymous submission form hosted by the NSPE Engineering Access and Growth (EAG) Committee. It allows members to ask thoughtful questions about expanding pathways into the profession, supporting engineers at every stage of their careers, and strengthening the profession through opportunity and innovation. It’s designed to help members access resources, guidance, and support that promote growth and opportunity in engineering.

Through a peer-based review process led by experienced professional engineers and NSPE volunteer leaders, the AMA is designed to provide experience-driven insight, practical guidance, and professional support that promote growth and opportunity in engineering.

Why is NSPE launching the AMA?

As part of NSPE’s commitment to creating a welcoming, accessible, and thriving profession, the AMA gives members a way to:

  • Raise thoughtful questions about barriers to access and advancement in engineering and explore them through peer insight and shared experience.
  • Ask questions safely and anonymously about professional challenges, career development, and pathways to advancement.
  • Receive thoughtful, experience-based guidance from peers and leaders across the engineering community.
  • Share perspectives that may help inform future conversations, programs, and resources that support member growth.
  • Build a stronger sense of connection and belonging by showing that every member’s voice matters.
  • Inspire thoughtful dialogue about issues affecting access, opportunity, and growth in the engineering profession.

Is the AMA related to DEI initiatives?

The AMA is part of NSPE’s broader Engineering Access and Growth commitment. While it builds on past inclusion efforts, it focuses specifically on expanding pathways, creating opportunities, and supporting engineers’ professional growth.

How it Works

How do I submit a question?

  • Go to the AMA Submission Form
  • Log in to the website with your NSPE credentials. (Your email address is automatically collected upon login for verification purposes.)
  • Type your question in the text box provided.
    • Avoid including any names, personal details, or identifiable information.
  • To submit a question, indicate whether you would like your question considered for anonymous publication. All submitted questions will receive a direct email response. (You may choose the email address where you would like that response sent; it does not need to be the email address associated with your NSPE membership.)
  • Review the Terms and Conditions & Disclaimer.
  • Click Submit Question.

Who can submit a question?

All NSPE members are encouraged to participate. Questions from students, early-career engineers, mid-career professionals, and leaders are welcome.

Is it really anonymous?

Yes. Your name and email address are visible only to authorized NSPE staff when you submit a question through the AMA Initiative.

  • Your email address associated with your NSPE membership is automatically collected when you log in for verification purposes, but it is accessible only to authorized NSPE staff and is never shared or published.
  • Before questions are shared or published, they are reviewed and anonymized by NSPE staff to remove any potentially identifying information. NSPE does not publish submitters’ names.
  • The system also collects limited technical information (such as IP addresses) when you log in for site-security purposes. This information is kept confidential and is not shared with NSPE members.
  • Your question will appear anonymous to other members and the public.

What kinds of questions are encouraged?

We welcome constructive and forward-looking questions that focus on:

  • Improving access to the engineering profession.
  • Creating opportunities for professional growth.
  • Supporting engineers at different career stages.
  • Expanding pathways for licensure, mentorship, or workforce development.
  • Building a stronger, more inclusive engineering community.

What questions are not appropriate?

The AMA is designed to provide peer-to-peer career guidance within engineering. It is not intended as a complaint or grievance channel.

Please do not submit:

  • Personal grievances or issues about specific individuals or organizations

  • Political statements or commentary

  • Spam, offensive, or abusive content

All submissions are reviewed to ensure they align with the initiative’s career-focused purpose and maintain a respectful and constructive environment.

What Happens After You Submit

What happens to my question after I submit it?

  1. The Engineering Access and Growth Committee reviews submissions for relevance and appropriateness.
  2. The Ask Me Anything Initiative is primarily focused on peer-to-peer career insights and professional experiences. Questions outside this focus may be referred to the appropriate NSPE staff or department for response.
  3. Selected questions may be answered on the NSPE website or shared through other NSPE publications and platforms, including but not limited to:
    • Online Q&A posts and open forums
    • Newsletter spotlights
    • Articles or webinars
    • Other NSPE website content
    • Other NSPE platforms

*If your question is selected for sharing, it will remain anonymous.*

What happens after my question is shared?

The Engineering Access and Growth Committee uses AMA submissions to identify trends and guide future content, including webinars, articles, and resource development. Over time, member input through the AMA will help inform new professional growth initiatives and advocacy priorities across NSPE.

Will all questions receive a response?

While we aim to address as many questions as possible, not all submissions are guaranteed to receive an individual response.

The Ask Me Anything (AMA) Initiative operates as a committee-run program during the NSPE program year. Responses are handled on a rolling basis by volunteer committee members, and timing may vary depending on workload, capacity, and seasonal breaks. When the committee is not in session, the AMA will pause and resume at the start of the next program year.

We will aim to send submitters a private email response where possible, with priority given to submissions that request a private response, subject to committee capacity.

Some submissions may instead be:

  • Grouped and addressed together through a broader public response on the NSPE website or other NSPE platforms, particularly when they reflect common themes or emerging priorities
  • Referred to the appropriate NSPE staff or department if they fall outside the AMA’s peer-to-peer career focus
  • Reviewed but not selected for response due to volume or prioritization constraints

Submissions that opt into publication consideration may be featured anonymously, with all identifying information removed and only with member consent. Submissions that do not opt in for publication, or are not selected for publication, may still be reviewed, but a response is not guaranteed.

Can I opt out of having my question published?

Yes. The submission form specifically includes a question asking whether you give NSPE permission to publish your question on the NSPE website or through other NSPE publications and platforms. You can select Yes to allow publication or No to keep your question private.

Please note that opting in for publication consideration means your question will be considered; however, not all submissions that opt in will be selected.

Participation & Engagement

Will the AMA be ongoing?

The Ask Me Anything Initiative operates as a committee-run program during the NSPE program year. When the committee is not in session, the initiative will pause and resume at the start of the next program year. Highlights and selected responses from the AMA may be featured on the NSPE website or shared through other NSPE publications and platforms during active periods. During active periods, responses are addressed on a rolling basis by volunteer committee members, and timing may vary depending on workload and capacity.

How will my participation make a difference?

Your participation helps NSPE:

  • Identify barriers to access and professional growth.
  • Shape programs and advocacy efforts.
  • Strengthen the engineering profession by ensuring all voices are heard.
  • Foster a culture of belonging, mentorship, and professional support within the engineering community.
