The rates of participation by African Americans, American Indians, and Latinos in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields have flatlined and in some cases declined. At a recent National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering symposium held in May in Vienna, Virginia, participants addressed the need for action to tap into this potential talent base and to achieve an engineering workforce that reflects the diversity of America.
Building Information Modeling tools are set to become the standard technology used in the AEC industry. Some engineering firms are already ahead of the curve and are benefiting from the BIM revolution. KAI Design & Build, based in St. Louis, has used BIM for six years and recently hired Adam Lega to serve as its first BIM coordinator.
