This session will examine the legal bases for liability–contractual and professional–related to the increasingly broad spectrum of services provided by engineers. The session will examine key risk factors that should be considered when reviewing project opportunities. Suggestions on ways to manage risk for specific projects, clients, and project delivery systems will be discussed.
Explain the legal expectations of state registration laws and the US legal system for professional engineers to protect public health, safety, and welfare;
Discuss professional liability claims and their costs for professional service firms and the public;
Recognize how negligently performed services can result in professional liability claims;
Review professional engineers’ performance of professional services to reduce claims and protect public health and safety.
