NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden participated in a Clean and Safe Energy Coalition teleconference featuring David Mullen, international representative for the utility department of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Mullen described his personal experience as an equipment operator at a nuclear power plant and the culture of safety and rigorous, ongoing training in the nuclear energy industry. He said that IBEW's primary concern is public health and safety. IBEW supports loan guarantees for new nuclear facilities and a streamlined permitting process that maintains quality building standards and nuclear safety.

NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden participated in an R&D Credit Coalition teleconference to discuss federal legislation that would promote domestic research and manufacturing. NSPE is a member of the R&D Credit Coalition, a group of more than 275 trade and professional associations and companies of all sizes that collectively represent millions of American workers engaged in U.S.-based research throughout major sectors of the economy, including aerospace, agriculture, biotechnology, chemicals, electronics, energy, information technology, manufacturing, medical technology, pharmaceuticals, software, and telecommunications. The objectives of the coalition are a strong, permanent R&D credit of commensurate rate for all companies; a 20% simplified credit; and an extension of the traditional credit.

NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden attended a High-Performance Building Congressional Caucus Coalition briefing on "Earthquake Hazards and the Nation's Buildings," where structural engineers discussed the need for stricter earthquake codes and standards in U.S. buildings and Federal Emergency Management Agency Hazus Project Manager Eric Berman discussed FEMA's Risk Mapping, Assessment, and Planning software.

NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden represented NSPE at an Industry Summit on Sustainability and Risk, sponsored by the Associated General Contractors and American Institute of Architects. The summit was attended by representatives from government agencies including the Environmental Protection Agency and General Services Administration; industry organizations including the American Bar Association, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Building Owners and Managers Association International, International Code Council, and National Institute of Building Sciences; insurance and surety companies including Victor O. Schinnerer and Company; and private practitioners. The group discussed sustainability trends, the cost of sustainability, and the implementation of "green codes."

NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden participated in a Coalition for National Science Funding meeting, where National Science Foundation Assistance Director for Geosciences Tim Killeen spoke about the Geosciences Directorate and NSF's programmatic goals for FY12.

NSPE is a member of CNSF, an alliance of more than 125 organizations united by a concern for the future of the national science, mathematics, and engineering professions. CNSF supports increasing national investment in the National Science Foundation's research and education programs.

NSPE Treasurer Leanne Panduren, P.E., F.NSPE, Executive Director Larry Jacobson, and Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden met with Congressmen Joe Barton, P.E. (R-TX-6) and David McKinley, P.E. (R-WV-1) and staff from the offices of Congresswoman Candice Miller (R-MI-10) and Congressman David Wu (D-OR-1). Topics of discussion included STEM education, Good Samaritan protection for professional engineers, and the critical role professional engineers play in nuclear safety.

NSPE cosponsored the Society of Women Engineers's "Diversity and Inclusion Fuels Innovation in STEM" Capitol Hill Day. The event included a congressional reception, where Representatives Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD-6), Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX-30), Dan Lipinski (D-IL-3), and Silvestre Reyes (D-TX-16) spoke about the importance of broadening participation in STEM fields.

NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden participated in a Council on the Federal Procurement of Architectural and Engineering Services meeting. NSPE is a founding member of COFPAES, an organization dedicated to protecting and promoting the Brooks Act (PL 92-582) and the use of qualifications-based selection.

NSPE President-Elect Christopher M. Stone, P.E., F.NSPE, LEED AP, was the keynote speaker at the Department of Transportation's "Engineers Move America," an event directed toward high-school students that recognizes the role of engineering in the nation's transportation program. In his address, Stone encouraged students to pursue careers in engineering to solve the challenges the world is facing. The program also featured remarks by Deputy Secretary of Transportation John Porcari and panel discussions with representatives from the DOT operating administrations, other engineering organizations, and universities.
