A new policy guide from NSPE has added the professional engineer’s voice to the growing conversation around the safe development and deployment of emerging technologies. The guide’s safety recommendations begin with the premise that the public’s interests are best served when licensed professional engineers oversee the design, development, and/or deployment of emerging technologies.

NSPE and the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers are pressing Governor Brian Kemp to veto a bill that would undermine the PE license by creating a separate licensing system for structural engineers.

The National Society of Professional Engineers deplores the injustice within our society that led to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless others. We also condemn the violence it has in some places provoked. Racism in any form is not acceptable. To this end, I would remind all members that basic human decency and the NSPE Code of Ethics demand that “Engineers shall treat all persons with dignity, respect, fairness and without discrimination.”

NSPE President David Martini, P.E., F.NSPE, is urging Congress to include professional associations, like NSPE, in relief funding for small businesses. In a letter to House and Senate lawmakers, Martini urged the lawmakers to make Section 501(c)(6) organizations eligible for certain economic relief opportunities under the CARES Act, such as the Paycheck Protection Program.

As the world responds to the coronavirus, NSPE would like to express its concern for our members, staff, and all who are affected by this pandemic.
Licensed professional engineers are obligated to hold the public health, safety, and welfare above all other considerations. This principle is fundamental to the mission of NSPE and our NICET certification division.
