To Protect Public, AI Development Needs PE Input

Monday, March 16, 2020

NSPE is urging the Office of Management and Budget and other federal agencies to use the subject-matter expertise of professional engineers for the implementation and regulation of artificial intelligence.

In response to an Office of Management and Budget request for comment on a draft memorandum on artificial intelligence, NSPE expressed concern over the suggestion that federal agencies use voluntary consensus standards. Voluntary consensus standards, among the other recommendations in the memo, create a minimized regulatory environment in which AI developers can create technology without considering the effects on the public health, safety, and welfare. To protect the public, NSPE recommends a third-party verification process, in which a professional engineer is in responsible charge of risk evaluation.
