NSPE secured a major provision in a mine reclamation bill (H.R. 2937) that requires the seal of a PE on engineering plans. The Community Reclamation Partnerships Act, passed by the House of Representatives in October, eases state and community efforts to clean up areas affected by abandoned mines.

NSPE has played a critical role in the development of a recently introduced bill that would bolster early engineering education. The Developing Tomorrow’s Engineering and Technical Workforce Act was introduced on October 11, by Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) and cosponsors Rep. Tom Reed (R-NY) and Rep. Paul Tonko (D-NY). NSPE secured a bill provision explicitly emphasizing early engineering education as a vital component in attaining licensure as a professional engineer.

The second version of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s guidance on autonomous vehicles, A Vision for Safety, has reinforced the National Society of Professional Engineers’ disappointment and deepened its concern due to the guidance’s failure to adequately take into account NSPE’s expressed public safety concerns.

Hurricane Harvey became the first major Atlantic hurricane of the season to make landfall in late August. Even as Harvey’s strength was reduced to a tropical storm level, it produced record setting rains that caused catastrophic flooding in the greater metropolitan area of Houston and other parts of southeastern Texas. Texas Governor Greg Abbot declared a state of disaster on August 28 with damages projected to reach up to $180 billion.

In a record-breaking advocacy action alert campaign, more than 700 NSPE members contacted 289 House offices to oppose a bill that would make sweeping changes to federal motor vehicle safety standards to accelerate the widespread deployment of autonomous vehicles.
