In February 2022, the NSPE Board of Directors endorsed, per the Committee on Policy and Advocacy recommendation, “The Role of the Engineering Community in Addressing Climate Change.” Prepared with input from a working group of sixteen organizations including NSPE, the statement is intended to unite, energize, and motivate people within and across organizations, and to fulfill their desires for meaning and purpose in their professional lives.

The NSPE Education Foundation is honored to announce a $30,000 donation from NSPE member Om P. Popli, P.E., PLS to establish a new scholarship to promote diversity in the profession by encouraging and supporting minority female students pursuing an engineering degree. Read the full press release.

NSPE joined the DC Society of Professional Engineers in recommending that Mayor Muriel Bowser nominate Daniel Hanlon, P.E., F.NSPE, to fill the current vacancy on the DC Public Service Commission. Hanlon would bring to the position over 40 years of engineering experience, including knowledge and expertise in utility operations, capital development and improvements. He would also bring to the commission a commitment to the principles of the professional engineer.

NSPE members and staff logged a record-breaking 4,323 grassroots actions in 2021—a 129% increase over the number of grassroots actions logged in 2020. Over the course of 35 advocacy campaigns, 1,406 NSPE members made their voices heard in 2021. These campaigns spanned a variety of issues, from protecting the license to infrastructure to STEM education.

NSPE Government Relations staff has recognized the top NSPE member advocates from the second half of 2021 and invited them to participate in a roundtable on December 8. Attendees had a thorough discussion on why advocacy is important to them and how we can get more members participating in advocacy opportunities, among other topics. NSPE’s top advocates have been recognized for their high level of participation in advocacy campaigns found within the NSPE Advocacy Center.

NSPE and NSPE-DC submitted a letter to District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser, recommending that she appoint a licensed professional engineer to serve on DC’s Public Service Commission. The seat will open up following the confirmation of current PSC Chair Willie Phillips Jr., to serve as a commissioner on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

NSPE and the National Academy of Forensic Engineers have nominated four NSPE members as part of an open call for nominations to the National Institute for Standards and Technology’s National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee.

To protect the public from the potential dangers of artificial intelligence applications, NSPE is calling for the involvement of licensed professional engineers or duly certified individuals in the AI development process. NSPE’s recommendations were submitted to the National Institute of Standards and Technology in response to NIST’s request for input on an artificial intelligence risk management framework.

Every year, we administer the QBS Awards, recognizing public and private entities that make exemplary use of the qualifications-based selection process at the federal, state and local levels. QBS Award winners serve as examples of how well the QBS process works, and they help us promote the practice of QBS in jurisdictions that do not use, or underutilize, QBS to procure engineering services.
