Solid Engineering Experience and Dedication to Global Community Service Earn Recognition for Young Engineer

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (July 31, 2009) – Suzanne Aultman, P.E., was recently named the 2009 Young Engineer of the Year by the National Society of Professional Engineers at the 2009 Annual Meeting in St. Louis, Mo.

Aultman is the chief engineer for the Atlanta Division of Metromont Corp., a precast/prestressed concrete producer specializing in parking garages, office buildings, schools, warehouses, stadiums, and other building structures. She is a member of many technical and professional societies, including the Piedmont Chapter of the South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers, where she serves as a MATHCOUNTS and "Discover E" volunteer. She was selected as the Young Engineer of the Year by both the local chapter and state society in 2008. She is also heavily involved in the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute, where she is a member of the 2009 Leadership PCI class, 2009 Blue Ribbon Committee, and the Blast Resistance and Structural Integrity Committee.
 
Aultman holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and a master's degree in civil engineering with a focus on structural engineering from Clemson University. In addition to her career at Metromont, she is an adjunct professor in the civil engineering department at her alma mater, where she has taught the graduate-level engineering course "Prestressed Concrete Design."
 
Aultman is also dedicated to local community and worldwide service. She serves as a deacon at Downtown Community Fellowship in Clemson and has helped lead various ministries, including a mission trip to Veracruz, Mexico, to work with mountain villages to provide medical clinics, education, and other needs. As part of Engineering Ministries International, she has used her engineering skills in helping to design a training center and inspect hospital buildings in India, to design a church and medical clinic for hurricane victims in Guatemala, and most recently, to assist in the design of a school, medical clinic, and community center in Amman, Jordan.

The Young Engineer of the Year Award recognizes young NSPE members who have made outstanding contributions to the engineering profession and their communities during the early years of their careers. Any licensed professional engineer or engineer intern who is an NSPE member in good standing and is 35 years of age or younger as of January 1 is eligible for nomination. The NSPE Honor Awards Committee selects the recipient on the basis of educational and collegiate achievements, professional and technical society activities, civic and humanitarian activities, continuing competence, and engineering achievements.
