Jacksonville Engineer Receives Prestigious Award
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (July 31, 2008) – Peter J. Sheridan III, P.E., has been awarded the Professional Engineers in Private Practice (PEPP) Merit Award at the 2008 National Society of Professional Engineers Annual Conference in Portland, Ore.
The PEPP Merit Award is presented to committee chairs or members, PEPP members serving in liaison functions or joint activities or any member who has made significant contributions to the organization and the engineering profession. In addition, the employer of the winner is recognized for the support the consulting engineering firm has given to the profession through the activities of the recipient.
Sheridan is the director of engineering and CEI at Keith and Schnars, P.A. in Jacksonville, Fla., a full-service engineering, planning and surveying firm recognized as a premier client-oriented engineering firm in Florida. Prior to joining Keith and Schnars, Sheridan worked for the City of Fort Lauderdale for over 13 years, starting as an entry-level engineer and culminating his career as the assistant city engineer.
Sheridan has been a member of NSPE and the Florida Engineering Society since 1987. He has served in various positions within FES and is currently the president for the Northeast Florida Chapter. At the state level, he has served as chair and cochair for the Annual Conference Committee, treasurer for the Florida Engineers Political Action Committee and a member of the Committee of Legislative and Government Affairs, Consulting Engineers Legislative Council, Professional Development Committee and the Strategic Plan Implementation Task Force.
In addition to professional endeavors, Sheridan is involved in engineering awareness and outreach efforts in his community. He helped develop a PowerPoint program "Discover Engineering," which is used to educate high school and middle school students on the different engineering disciplines in an effort to encourage them to pursue a career in engineering. Sheridan also spearheaded the Lauderdale Manors Playground Project in the City of Fort Lauderdale, where local engineering firms donated funds and volunteers helped build a playground for children in an underprivileged community.
Sheridan was the 2007 recipient of the Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers's A.W. Gilchrist Award, presented to a registered professional engineer who has brought recognition to the profession through public office and civic leadership with significant participation in FICE and other professional societies.
