Dan J. Wittliff, P.E., DEE, F.NSPE
President 2012–13

Dan J. Wittliff, P.E., DEE, F.NSPE, from Austin, Texas is the 2012–13 president of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE).

An NSPE member since 1972, Mr. Wittliff has held many and varied volunteer leadership positions with the Society including member of the Board of Directors and House of Delegates. He has chaired the NSPE Membership Committee and served on the Society's Budget Committee, Homeland Security Task Force and Candidate Screening Committee, to name but a few. Most recently, he helped found and chaired the Software Engineering Licensure Consortium. He currently represents NSPE on the Board of Trustees for the American Academy of Environmental Engineers.  Mr. Wittliff was named an NSPE Fellow in 2004.

A longtime member of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers, he has also served in numerous state and chapter volunteer leadership roles including president of the Abilene Chapter and the Texas Society of Professional Engineers where he was honored as Engineer of the Year in 1998 and Distinguished Engineer of the Texas Engineering Foundation in 2001. In 2010, he was the recipient of the NSPE Presidential Award.

Mr. Wittliff is managing director of Environmental Services for GDS Associates in Austin, keeping complex and multiphase projects on schedule and within budget. Prior to joining GDS Associates, he was principal of Dan Wittliff Consulting and vice president and chief operating officer of HydroProcessing. He has also served as the first chief engineer for the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC) and as manager of environmental services with West Texas Utilities.

In 2002 Mr. Wittliff retired from the United States Air Force Reserve at the rank of colonel. His active duty career included a stint as the commander of a communications detachment on a mountaintop in Central Turkey.  His military awards and distinctions include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with five oak leaf clusters, Outstanding Graduate of Air War College, and the Air Force Communications-Electronics Professionalism Award.

Licensed as a professional engineer in Texas and Tennessee, Mr. Wittliff is a 1972 graduate of Southern Methodist University (SMU) where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering and membership in Pi Tau Sigma mechanical engineering honorary.  He holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Oklahoma where he was elected to membership in the Beta Gamma Sigma business honorary.  He is a member of the Society of American Military Engineers and served as treasurer for the Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering.  Mr. Wittliff also serves on the Board of Advisors for the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at SMU.
