NSPE Briefs Chinese Delegation on Professional Engineering Issues
NSPE Executive Director Larry Jacobson, NICET Chief Operating Executive Michael Clark, NSPE Director of Professional Practice Kim Granados, and NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden met with a 20-member delegation from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Human Resources and Social Securit y to discuss engineering licensure, certification, ethics, leadership, and government relations.

NSPE Supports Qualifications-Based Selection
NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden participated in a Council on the Federal Procurement of Architectural and Engineering Services meeting. NSPE is a founding member of COFPAES, an organization dedicated to protecting and promoting the Brooks Act (PL 92-582) and the use of qualifications-based selection.

NSPE President Comments on Ethics before Department of Energy Commission
NSPE President Michael Hardy commented before the Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future on the role of professional engineers in nuclear safety. NSPE's comments focused on the ethics and sense of personal responsibility that influence a PE's decision-making process. Read NSPE's comments here. The Blue Ribbon Commission is part of the Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Energy. The Commission has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of policies for managing the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle, including all alternatives for the storage, processing, and disposal of civilian and defense used nuclear fuel, high-level waste, and materials derived from nuclear activities.

NSPE Attends Federal Communications Commission Broadband Meeting
NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden attended a meeting of the Federal Communications Commission's Advisory Committee on Diversity for Communications in the Digital Age. The meeting included a report on broadband issues and a presentation on adoption of broadband technology on tribal lands. The FCC created the National Broadband Plan, a proposal to encourage the spread of high-speed Internet access. Read the National Broadband Plan here.

NSPE Partnership with Energy Star Accords Members New Online Resource
The Environmental Protection Agency has developed a new offering exclusively for Energy Star partners such as NSPE that allows members easy access to tools, resources, and recognition opportunities to deliver value to their clients and increase their own business opportunities." The Users Guide to Marketing Services and Products with Energy Star" is a comprehensive and interactive online resource that brings together information from across the Energy Star website.

White House Advisory Council Releases K–12 STEM Education Study
The President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology released its K–12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education study," Prepare and Inspire: K–12 Education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) for America's Future." The study makes specific recommendations to the federal government on how to better prepare America's K–12 students in STEM subjects and how to inspire students to challenge themselves with STEM classes, engage in STEM activities outside the school classroom, and consider pursuing careers in STEM fields. NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden attended the September 2 PCAST meeting where the study was reviewed.

NSPE Comments on Definition of Highway Quality
NSPE submitted comments to the National Partnership for Highway Quality on NPHQ's definition of highway quality. NPHQ's partners include the Federal Highway Administration, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and Associated General Contractors. The organization also has partnerships with Departments of Transportation in Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, and Texas.

NSPE Supports R&D Tax Credit
NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden participated in an R&D Credit Coalition teleconference. NSPE is a member of the coalition, a group of more than 275 trade and professional associations and companies of all sizes that collectively represent millions of American workers engaged in U.S.-based research throughout major sectors of the economy, including aerospace, agriculture, biotechnology, chemicals, electronics, energy, information technology, manufacturing, medical technology, pharmaceuticals, software, and telecommunications. The objectives of the R&D Credit Coalition are a strong, permanent R&D credit of commensurate rate for all companies; a 20% simplified credit; and an extension of the traditional credit.

NSPE Attends Smart Grid Briefing Featuring Agency and Congressional Leaders
NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden attended an Alliance to Save Energy briefing entitled " From Power Plant to Plug and Beyond: Energy Efficiency Opportunities Across the Smart Grid." Speakers included Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Chairman Jon Wellinghof, National Renewable Energy Laboratory Director Dan Arvizu, Department of Energy Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability Assistant Secretary Patricia Hoffman, Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Congressman Michael Burgess (R-TX-26), congressional staff, and private-sector leaders.

NSPE Attends White House Advisors' Meeting on STEM Education and Energy Technology
NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden attended the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology meeting. PCAST is an advisory group of the nation's leading scientists and engineers who directly advise President Obama on policy in areas where an understanding of science, technology, and innovation is key to strengthening America's economy. PCAST is administered by the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy. The meeting included reviews of a K–12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education study and an energy technology innovation study.

NSPE Participates in Department of Commerce Teleconference on Innovation
NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden participated in the Department of Commerce's National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship teleconference. The council advises Commerce Secretary Gary Locke on policy relating to building small businesses and helps keep the department engaged in a regular dialogue with the entrepreneurship and small business communities. Eight of the 26 council members have engineering backgrounds. The council discussed funding opportunities available through channels such as the i6 Challenge, challenge.gov, the Small Business Innovation Research program, and the Small Business Technology Transfer program.
