NSPE Discusses International A/E with Department of Commerce
Executive Director Larry Jacobson represented NSPE at a meeting with Department of Commerce Deputy Assistant Secretary for Asia Craig Allen. The meeting, a small-group discussion with architecture, engineering, construction, and planning organizations, focused on improving the business environment for firms that perform A/E services in China.
 
NSPE Supports Fundamental Science and Engineering Research
NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden participated in a Coalition for National Science Funding congressional briefing on the importance of fundamental science and engineering research to technological advances in the marketplace. Speakers included National Science Foundation Director Subra Suresh, NSF Engineering Directorate Assistant Director Thomas Peterson, Reps. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX-18) and Dan Lipinski (D-IL-3), and National Academy of Sciences Director of Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Charles Wessner.
 
NSPE is a member of CNSF, an alliance of more than 125 organizations united by a concern for the future of the national engineering, science, and mathematics professions. CNSF supports increasing national investment in the National Science Foundation's research and education programs.

NSPE Meets with Congress
NSPE Treasurer Leanne Panduren, P.E., F.NSPE, Vermont member Amanda Hanaway-Corrente, P.E., Executive Director Larry Jacobson, and Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden met with Rep. Dave Reichert (R-WA-8) and staff to discuss the Good Samaritan Protection for Construction, Architectural, and Engineering Volunteers Act (H.R. 1145). The bill, which Reichert introduced last year, would provide qualified immunity to engineering, architectural, and construction entities volunteering in a declared emergency.
 
NSPE also met with senior staff for Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) to advocate Good Samaritan protection for professional engineers volunteering in an emergency.

NSPE Cosponsors SWE Capitol Hill Day
NSPE cosponsored the Society of Women Engineers' "Diversity and Inclusion Fuels Innovation in STEM" Capitol Hill Day. NASA Administrator Charles Bolden made brief remarks during the legislative briefing, outlining NASA's diversity efforts and urging women to mentor each other in order to increase diversity in the engineering profession.
 
The event also included a congressional reception, where Reps. Judy Biggert (R-IL-13), Robert Dold (R-IL-10), Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX-30), Dan Lipinski (D-IL-3), and Silvestre Reyes (D-TX-16) and National Science Foundation Deputy Director Cora Marrett spoke about the importance of broadening participation in STEM fields.

NSPE Supports Federal Funding of R&D
NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden participated in a congressional briefing on "The Economic Benefits of Federally Funded R&D." Economist correspondent Vijay Vaitheeswaran moderated a panel discussion with Dow Chemical Company R&D Director of Innovation Sourcing and Sustainable Technologies Katie Hunt, Battelle Memorial Institute Senior Director of Technology Partnership Practice Simon Tripp, and University of California at Davis Research Professor of Sociology Fred Block.

NSPE Attends Congressional Briefing on Undergraduate STEM Education
NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden participated in a congressional briefing on "STEM Education for an Innovative Workforce." The event featured a panel discussion of methods to improve undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education and the public policy needed to support these strategies. Speakers included Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute President Shirley Ann Jackson, Research Corporation for Science Advancement President James Gentile, Association of American Universities President Hunter Rawlings III, and American Chemical Society 2012 President Bassam Shakhashiri.

NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden attended a White House Office of Science and Technology Policy teleconference on recent administration events, activities, and initiatives in support of women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

NSPE President Addresses Students at DOT Engineers Day
NSPE President Christopher M. Stone, P.E., F.NSPE, F.ASCE, LEED AP, was the keynote speaker at the Department of Transportation's National Engineers Day, which encourages high school students to pursue careers in engineering. Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez also spoke. As part of his presentation, Stone led students in a rousing game of Jeopardy! The interactive event also included a robotics competition and engaged students in discussion groups. Read Administrator Mendez's blog about National Engineers Day here.

NSPE, MATHCOUNTS Sponsor MathAlive
NSPE President
Christopher M. Stone, P.E., F.NSPE, F.ASCE, LEED AP, NSPE Executive Director Larry Jacobson, and MATHCOUNTS Executive Director Lou DiGioia attended the launch of the MathAlive exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. MathAlive seeks to increase elementary and middle school students' interest in mathematics by engaging them in hands-on activities that demonstrate math's applications in video games, sports, fashion, music, robotics, and more. NSPE and MATHCOUNTS are cosponsoring the exhibit, which is presented by Raytheon.
