NSPE Sponsors Federal Engineer of the Year Award
NSPE sponsored the
Federal Engineer of the Year Award, which recognizes the achievements of engineers employed in the federal government. Attendees included Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez, Army Corps of Engineers Commanding General Robert Van Antwerp, Coast Guard Assistant Commandant for Engineering and Logistics Thomas Ostebo, Air Force Civil Engineer Timothy Byers, Public Health Service Chief Engineer Sven Rodenbeck, and Natural Resources Conservation Service Deputy Chief for Science and Technology C. Wayne Honeycutt. Naval Facilities Engineering Command Chief of Civil Engineers Christopher Mossey, P.E., served as keynote speaker.

SEC Exempts Engineering Advice from Municipal Advisor Registration Requirement
A Securities and Exchange Commission
proposed rulemaking in response to the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (PL 111-203) would require municipal advisors to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board. The proposed rulemaking exempts "engineers providing engineering advice" from the registration requirement. Following discussion with NSPE members, NSPE decided not to comment on the issue.

NSPE Advocates Introduction of the E2 for Innovation Act
NSPE sent a letter to Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Congressman Paul Tonko (D-NY-21) in support of the Engineering Education for Innovation Act, which will be introduced in the coming weeks. The E2 for Innovation Act would provide grants to integrate engineering curricula and content into classrooms across the country. The bill's goals of increasing student achievement and interest in engineering, broadening the diversity of students participating in engineering, and developing a workforce prepared to teach engineering are critical to cultivating the next generation of engineers.

NSPE Member Promotes Metro Safety Despite Budget Cuts
Richard Sarles, P.E., General Manager of Washington, D.C.'s Metro, emphasized protecting public safety in a radio interview about Metro's budget shortfall and expected service cuts. Prior to becoming head of Metro, Sarles spent more than 25 years in the transit industry with New Jersey Transit, Amtrak, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. He has been a member of NSPE since 2002.

NSPE Supports Innovation in Energy Efficiency
NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden attended the Alliance to Save Energy
Great Energy Efficiency Day on Capitol Hill. Discussion focused on innovation in energy efficiency and how to make energy efficiency profitable for industry and affordable for consumers. Speakers included Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN), Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Senator Mark Warner (D-VA), Assistant Secretary of Commerce Suresh Kumar, senior staff from the Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection, Business Roundtable President John Engler, and representatives from the design and manufacturing industries. Five of the speakers had engineering backgrounds, and one was a professional engineer.

NSPE Champions National Science Foundation Funding
NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden represented NSPE at a Coalition for National Science Funding meeting. NSPE is a member of CNSF, an alliance of more than 125 organizations united by a concern for the future of the national science, mathematics, and engineering professions. CNSF supports increasing national investment in the National Science Foundation's research and education programs.

Engineers to Discuss Global Energy Issues
The focus of the September 2011 World Engineers' Convention in Geneva, Switzerland, will be "Engineers Power the World: Facing the Global Energy Challenge." Engineers, policymakers, and representatives of research and industry from all over the world will meet to discuss innovative solutions for providing energy for the world's population.

NSPE Attends Congressional Briefing on STEM Education
NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden attended a congressional briefing sponsored by the American Society for Engineering Education
Engineering Deans' Council on "Engineering Education and Research: How Engineering Colleges Help the U.S. Compete." Congressmen Dan Lipinski (D-IL-3) and Paul Tonko (D-NY-21), both engineers, advocated an increase in STEM education funding despite cuts to domestic spending. A panel of deans from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Mississippi State University, the University of Illinois, the University of Virginia, and Vanderbilt University discussed the need for engineering to be formalized at the K–12 level, taught interactively, and connected to math and science teaching.

NSPE Supports Broadening STEM Participation
NSPE Senior Manager of Government Relations Sarah Ogden attended a National Science Foundation
Committee on Equal Opportunities in Science and Engineering meeting. The meeting included a discussion with NSF Director Subra Suresh on increasing participation by underrepresented groups in STEM fields and a review of the committee's draft biennial report to Congress.
