The PEI Distinguished Service Award is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution of national scope to advance the causes of the individual engineer in industry or Professional Engineers in Industry (PEI). Eminence in the field of engineering does not have to be limited to that of technical contributions only, but also to the profession itself.
The award winner will receive an engraved plaque and two complimentary tickets to the NSPE awards ceremony.
- Qualifications/Method of Selection
Major consideration is given to the manner and extent to which professional engineers in industry have been enriched as a result of the nominee's influence and contributions. Any professional engineer licensed in the U.S. is eligible for the award except current officers of the NSPE-PEI Executive Board. Strong preference is given to NSPE-PEI membership and contributions, though not required.
Nominations can be made by any NSPE and/or PEI member in good standing, the individual's state society, or the state PEI organization. Multiple candidates may originate from any source. The recipient is selected by a committee that comprises of Past NSPE-PEI Chairs.
- Presentation
The award is presented at the NSPE Annual Conference. The nominee is expected to be available to receive the award in person.

Completed nomination packets should include:
- Nomination Form
- Letter of endorsement by state society, state PEI organization, or PEI member
- Nominee's biography/resume
- Deadline
Completed nomination packet must be received by NSPE by January 31. The winner will be selected and notified prior to April 1.

2011 PEI Distinguished Service Award Winner
Thomas R. Voss, P.E., was elected chairman of the board of directors of Ameren Corporation in April 2010. He was elected president and chief executive officer of Ameren in May 2009 - titles he retained with his promotion to board chairman. Voss served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Ameren from 2004 to 2009. In December 2006, he was elected to the additional position of president and chief executive officer of Ameren Missouri. Prior to this appointment, he was senior vice president, Generation, and president, AmerenEnergy and AmerenEnergy Resources (parent of Ameren's merchant generation operations) and was responsible for generation, fuels and services, trading and marketing operations. Previously, he served as senior vice president, Energy Delivery/Customer Services. Mr. Voss began his career with Union Electric (now known as Ameren Missouri) in 1969 after earning a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla. Voss is also a graduate of the University of Michigan's Public Utility Executive Program, the Westinghouse Advanced Power Systems School and the Reactor Technology Course for Utility Executives offered through the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, and the National Academy for Nuclear Training. He is a registered professional engineer in Missouri and Illinois.
