Dear engineering community:
On behalf of the entire NSPE community, we wish to express our most heartfelt and deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of the tragic shooting at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. As a Navy Engineering Duty Officer, I am keenly aware of the tremendous work that the 12 dead and 14 wounded were performing when their lives were tragically impacted. As many of you may know, the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), which is headquartered at the Navy Yard, purposefully operates to ensure that the U.S. Navy can protect and defend America. NAVSEA is comprised of command staff, headquarters directorates, affiliated program executive offices, and numerous field activities. Together they engineer, build, buy, and maintain ships, submarines, and combat systems that meet the fleet's current and future operational requirements.
The Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), the U.S. Navy's engineering command dedicated to the combat readiness of the Navy and Marine Corps, is headquartered within NAVSEA at the Navy Yards. It is with great sadness that we announce that two of the victims were employed at NAVFAC, one as a civilian employee and one as a security guard contractor.
This is a huge loss for the naval community, the engineering community, and the American people. NSPE honors the victims of this tragic event.
