The National Academy of Engineering releases its list of the greatest engineering feats of the 20th century. Members of NSPE and other engineering organizations took part in the voting process.
 
After 42 years, the Panama Canal Society of Professional Engineers closes its doors, when oversight of the canal was transferred from the U.S. to the Republic of Panama.
 

NSPE launches the American Engineering Campaign, a nationwide education effort to promote how engineers improve the quality of life.
 
NSPE and the engineering profession celebrate the 50th anniversary of National Engineers Week.
 

NSPE begins offering online ethics seminars.
 

PE magazine is launched, replacing Engineering Times, which had been published since 1979.
 
The inaugural NSPE House of Delegates Meeting is held in Boston.
 
NSPE plays an active role in promoting the initiative to require additional education beyond a bachelor's degree for licensure as a professional engineer.
 

NSPE celebrates the 100th anniversary of professional engineering licensure. A special June issue of PE magazine was published in partnership with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying.
