NSPE's representative to the campaign is Marco Pirozzi, P.E., an engineer in the materials engineering division of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Pirozzi performs lab and field tests on construction materials to ensure that they meet or exceed specifications and building codes. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering, both from Columbia University. One of his recent projects included converting an asphalt runway to concrete at John F. Kennedy International Airport, using a sustainable concrete mix He has also done extensive lab testing on concrete mixes used at the World Trade Center site.
Beyond his work, Pirozzi gives back to the profession in his spare time, working as an instructor and examiner for the American Concrete Institute's certification process. He also mentors high school students, teaching them the fundamentals and rewards of engineering. |
NSPE's Semifinalists

Jennifer Byle, P.E., a road engineer for URS Corp. in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has worked on everything from multilane freeways to local roads and nonmotorized trails. Her biggest achievement yet was being lead designer for the nine-mile Fred Meijer nonmotorized trail, an award-winning connection between two other local trails in western Michigan.
Involved in her local society activities, Byle has been a volunteer for EWeek for the past few years and volunteers at an annual golf event to raise money for her state society and MATHCOUNTS. She is also currently pursuing a master's degree in civil engineering.
Ryan Eckenrode, P.E., a traffic engineer for AECOM in Raleigh, North Carolina, has worked on a variety of engineering projects, including stormwater design, construction management, and transportation planning, among others. Eckenrode also recently became a certified professional traffic operations engineer. Committed to service, Eckenrode was student chapter president for the Institute of Transportation Engineers while earning his degree in civil engineering at Clemson. His projects in this role included providing aid to Hurricane Katrina victims.

Morgan Gagliano, P.E., a project engineer for Carollo Engineers in Sarasota, Florida, focuses on the analysis and design of water and wastewater systems. She has been design engineer for a number of projects, including a facility capable of disinfecting 100 million gallons of water per day.
Gagliano works on local chapter committees for the Florida Engineering Society and was named as her chapter's 2009 Young Engineer of the Year. She earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in civil and environmental engineering from South Dakota State University.
Casey Holland, a staff engineer at CH2M Hill, helps on restoration and decontamination projects. One program he worked on involved operation and maintenance of three treatment systems, site characterization investigations, and installation and monitoring of injection wells. Holland's work includes representing CH2M Hill as a board member of the Society of Military Engineers' post in Sacramento, California. where he has helped raise money for scholarships.
